Getting here
By air (most guests)
Fly into Kilimanjaro International (JRO). We arrange a scheduled or charter flight to our airstrip — about an hour — followed by a 25-minute drive to camp. Baggage is limited to 15 kg in soft bags on the small aircraft; we store the rest in Arusha at no charge.
By road
From Arusha allow about six hours on a mix of tar and good murram, with a stop for lunch. It is a good way to see the country and the price is lower than a charter.
Arrival day
You are met at the airstrip or in Arusha by name. Lunch is served on arrival at camp; your first drive is that afternoon.
What to pack
- Soft bags, not hard cases (weight limit 15 kg on flights)
- Neutral colours — khaki, olive, brown. Avoid bright blue and black, which can attract tsetse flies
- Layers: mornings on the drive are cold, midday is hot
- Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a good torch
- Binoculars — we lend a pair, but yours will be better
- Any regular medication, with a copy of the prescription
Health, visas, money
Health. Talk to a travel clinic 6–8 weeks before you fly about malaria prophylaxis and routine vaccinations. Travel and medical insurance, including emergency evacuation, is a condition of booking. Our staff are first-aid trained and the camp keeps a radio link to a flying doctor service.
Visas. Most visitors need a visa for Tanzania. Check the current rules for your passport and apply online before travelling.
Money. Your stay is paid in advance. Bring small US dollar notes (issued 2013 or later) or use mobile money for tips and curio shopping; there is no cash machine in the area.
Common questions
Is it safe to go on foot?
Walks are led by a guide with an armed ranger, in small groups, and follow a route chosen that morning. We turn back if an animal is too close. It is a low-risk activity when guides are experienced — ours are.
Can we come with children?
Yes, from age six, in the Family Tent. Children get a shorter version of each activity with a guide who is good with them.
Is there a signal or Wi-Fi?
There is Wi-Fi in the main lounge and mobile signal on the top of the outcrop. There is none in the tents. Most guests find they do not miss it by the second day.
Can you cater for allergies or a diet?
Yes. Tell us at booking. The chef cooks everything from scratch, so it is easy to adapt.
How far ahead should I book?
For July–September and the December holidays, six to nine months. For the green season, often a few weeks is enough.
Can I get a tailored itinerary with other parks?
We are happy to suggest a route and put you in touch with a trusted operator; we do not sell packages we do not run ourselves.
