How to run a good workshop in a room you have hired

Layouts, timing and catering: what to decide before the day.

A room does not make a workshop, but the wrong layout can ruin one. Decide these things before you book.

Choose the layout for the activity

Theatre seating suits talks. Classroom seating suits note-taking. Cabaret or banquet tables suit group work. The capacity of a room changes with the layout, so check the table.

Plan the time

Book an hour before you start for setup and an hour after for tidying. A six-hour booking is charged as six, so a full day costs no more than a long morning and afternoon.

Feed people at the right time

Tea and coffee at arrival and mid-morning, lunch at the same time every time. Give catering numbers 48 hours before.

Test the equipment early

Bring your laptop adapter, test the screen and sound the day before, and know where the wifi password is.
