What we mean by ‘where your gift goes’

A plain explanation of programmes, fundraising and governance, and why we print the split before you give.

Every charity spends money on things that are not the programme. The question is whether it tells you how much, and why.

Programmes

The work itself: school meals, health volunteers, seeds and tools, pump repairs. In our sample split this is 82% of every gift.

Fundraising

The cost of asking: this website, the receipts, a small team. In our sample split it is 10%. If we could raise the same money for less we would.

Governance and audit

The trustees, the annual audit and the compliance work that lets you trust the other two numbers. In our sample it is 8%.

Why we print it

A number you can check is worth more than a promise you cannot. The audited accounts are on the Impact page.
