What a plinth is for

The word means the base a building or a statue stands on. It is also a good way to think about site, drainage and first principles.

A plinth raises what stands on it above the ground, and gives it a firm, dry base. Most good buildings start there.

Water first

Most damage to buildings begins with water. Raising the ground floor above the surrounding ground, and shaping the site so that rain runs away from the walls, is the cheapest durability there is.
