Designing for equatorial light

Near the equator the sun is overhead, not low. That changes how we place windows, overhangs and rooms.

Near the equator the sun is overhead, not low. That changes almost everything about how a building should face the sky.

Shade first, view second

A deep overhang or a timber screen on the north and south faces cuts heat gain far more effectively than tinted glass. We test overhangs against the sun path before we fix window sizes.

Let air move

Openings on opposite faces, and a high point for hot air to leave, will keep a house comfortable for most of the year without machinery.
