Visiting a church for the first time

Five small things that make the first visit easier, from the door to the tea afterwards.

If you have not been to church for years, or ever, the first visit can feel harder than it is. Here is what usually happens.

At the door

Someone will say hello and hand you a sheet with the order of service. You do not have to say more than your first name.

Sitting down

Sit wherever you like. Most people sit towards the middle or back on a first visit, and that is fine.

During the service

You may join in the singing and the prayers, or simply listen. When the offering is taken, you may give, pass the plate on or do nothing at all.

Afterwards

There is tea and coffee, and people will want to say hello. You can stay for a minute or an hour.

If you have children

They are welcome, and so is the noise. Ask a steward about children’s church.
