Reading the Psalms of ascent

A short guide to the pilgrim songs behind our current sermon series.

Fifteen short psalms, each headed ‘A song of ascents’, were sung by pilgrims walking up to Jerusalem. They are honest about weariness and trust.

Psalm 121: where does my help come from?

A question and an answer in eight verses. The traveller looks at the hills and remembers who made them.

Psalm 126: those who sow in tears

A memory of joy and a prayer for more. Sowing in tears is not the same as failing.

Psalm 127: unless the Lord builds the house

About work, rest and worry. Sleep is a gift, not a reward.

Read them slowly

Each takes two minutes to read. Try one a day and notice what you notice.
